Quick - Stratigic - Tactical - Fairly Simple - Great Replay value

This is a great card game that travels well and doesn't need a huge area to play. Set up takes a couple of minutes and depending on the order the cards play out , game time takes 15-30mins. Some times it flows and seems like a series of simple choices with a bit of stratagy , others games every descision feels like it could be a win or lose choice. But all games require thought, there is a lil luck but by and large you feel like its your good or bad play that will determin the out come. What makes this game different is that you get to see at least 8 of the cards that are in play that you or your opponent could pick up on thier go , and your decisions in the action phase effect what they with have to choose from in thier next couple of goes, and conversely they do to. Its a balance between what benefits you and what might benefit them and is it the risk / reward worth it. There is a great balance of collecting, building, and interaction, do you hold out for a bigger score, do you score low but often do you sabotage thier game! All rolled up in some of the most beautiful artwork and theming printed on good quality cards.Once you have learned it and how to play , it really only takes 5 mins to teach someone else.Simple ideas, lots of decisions per game, its not perfect but few games are.Alsoif you like 2 player card games that take a bit of planning and have good theming look out for Trambahn.

what a great, quirky game

I bought this for my 9yo son and we played it for hours on Christmas day. It overshadowed all other gifts. It's involved enough to keep an adult engaged but not too difficult for children of 8 or 9. The rules were clear and pretty intuitive once you grasp the concept of it being a walk through a forest and you can only carry so many things in your hands at once. We are interested in mushrooms and foraging generally but I don't think you have to be to enjoy this game. It's a genuinely good game with a lovely, quirky theme.Having played the game a lot now I would suggest the following adjustments to a future addition:1: Print the common names of the mushrooms on the cards (currently only the latin names appear).2: Consider adding a 'joker' card (perhaps the Amethyst Deceiver) that can be cooked with 2 of any other mushroom species to make a meal.3: We find it odd that there are Shiitake mushroom cards. Surely it would make more sense to use a species that actually grows in the wild here? Blewits perhaps?

ONE OF THE VERY BEST CARD GAMES WE’VE PLAYED!

I’m not a lover of cards games, and so being a games collector (now having more than 700 in my collection!) for once, did not really purchase this intending to play, but for the beautiful artwork, and theme; I LOVE anything to do with mushrooms or toadstools. An unusual theme this for a game anyway, but having had it several months, decided impulsively to just have a go at reading the rules the other day and having a go at playing - am I glad that I did! This has turned out to be one of the very best card games we can remember playing! At first, one can be forgiven for thinking the rules are very complicated – and there a lot of things to remember, however, they do supply cards so players at a glance can see what choice they have on their turn, as there are no less than five different actions they may perform – but only one of them, and even if it is to their disadvantage to so!As always in these types of games; it can seem a little pricey for what is really a pack of cards (no other playing pieces at all) but do not let this put you off, as this will grow on you! (no pun intended!)We love it, and since starting to play, have found it rather addictive, and have played so far each day since! Having so many games in my collection to play, this is a first for us!Great game that is also educational.

Great two player game, beautiful artwork

Fungi is a wonderful two-player game! The premise sounds a little odd, but is completely engaging once you start playing. There's a nice amount of strategy (you do need to plan ahead!) and not too much luck involved (beyond the order of the card pile), but the game itself is quite short (about half an hour) and compact and is easy to play while travelling. The artwork is completely striking and the attention to detail is amazing (the night cards have, for example, little night animals nibbling the mushrooms). It's easy to learn and fun to play, though I recommend using the alternative forest path layout recommended in the instructions!

Great Theme: Collect mushrooms, Cook them, Eat them and Wash them down with Cider.

Fungi is an excellent 2-player card game. The theme revolves around collecting and cooking mushrooms. The artwork is simply fantastic - and for some of the mushrooms there is both a daytime version and a nighttime version. The game initially plays as a set collection game - taking turns collecting sets of the same type of mushroom from a common pool of cards into a basket. Collecting extra baskets allows for collecting more mushrooms. Then, with careful hand management, it becomes possible to "cook" sets of cards in a frying pan - gaining extra points by playing larger sets with butter and / or cider. Warning: if you like mushrooms cooked in butter, playing this game will make you hungry! There are some lovely twists to the game play, such as the occurrence of poisonous mushrooms and the extra value nighttime versions of the mushrooms. In addition, it is possible to sell mushrooms for "sticks" that can then be spent to allow a player greater choice when picking mushrooms from the forest floor. All in all a great 2-player set collecting game that plays in under half an hour and is very transportable (c. 100 playing cards). The theme is excellent and the game mechanics really work with the theme. Why not 5 stars? Well, the cards have the mushroom's name in Latin but the rules use the common name! This very minor issue is also slightly off-putting for the kids who have no idea why the Latin names are "so complicated". Still, they got over that after a few games by simply matching cards to sets based on artwork alone.
