There is only one way. Slide three AAA batteries into the plastic holder and hey presto.

Q: how do you switch it on?

At the end on the handle is a large button (Amazon picture shows it as orange but mine is green). Press firmly and it will click and the light switches on. Press again gently and it switches the light from bright to a different mode with each light press - bright, medium, low, strobe, SOS. Press again firmly until it clicks to switch off.

It has a very wide field of very bright light when set at maximum spread so I imagine that it would. For horses I don't know, but it's no good for finding Schrödinger's Cat, I know - I've tried!
