Cambridge IGCSE™ First Language English Exam Preparation and Practice (Cambridge International IGCSE)

I found the structure of the book very helpful in terms of preparation for the exam- it takes you through the step by step methods to approach each aspect in the exams and the questions. The texts and questions maybe slightly harder, but it does effectively prepare you for what may be asked. I ended up getting a 9 in the end, so I would say it was a useful tool and will certainly increase the likelihood of getting a better grade.

As others have said, the level of difficulty is so high that my daughter got very scared and felt she would fail her exam. How are students supposed to write a summary of a text they don't understand? Maybe this book works, if your child is predicted 8 or 9, or if this is the 5th study guide they are working though. If not, I would recommend using something else, eg. Dr Patrick's "How to Ace the English Language iGCSE" (green version) or Letts' "Cambridge iGCSE English Revision Guide".We gave up on this book until my daughter had worked her way through a few other books. We then focused on the practice paper section of this book, which was helpful.

I understand that this book was written with only one specimen paper for the new spec, but the level of difficulty is much harder than the real exams. This book is not suitable for teaching students with as it just freaks them out about the real exam. Maybe okay for A/A* students. Overall wouldn't recommend. Use the past papers instead - there's enough of them now!I hope CAIE bring out a new textbook matched to the correct level soon.
