Held out for a while but finally caved

I've been looking at these smart doorbells ever since the first Ring doorbells were released but had reservations about them up until now. I'd held off jumping in on video doorbells as I didn't want to have the hassle of running a power cable to the unit, as I'm not handy when it comes to drilling through walls or messing with electrics. I also had concerns about the wifi connectivity due to the location of my front door in relation to my router. A poor signal would only result in either the doorbell not functioning 100% of the time and the quality of the video being affected by a poor signal.I was also concerned with someone just coming along and walking away with what is essentially an expensive doorbell.Since upgrading my home wifi to a mesh system it has alleviated any concerns I had about my wifi signal strength. If it wasn't for a prime day offer that I'd been sent my Amazon I wouldn't have been alerted to the fact that these smart doorbells can run via battery. This peaked my interest so I started researching the various wireless models on the market. After reading all of the reviews I decided on the Eufy model since I have purchased a number of items from Anker in the past so knew that would likely be quality electronics.Installation was a breeze, requiring 2 screws to mount the doorbell bracket to my door. The base unit was connected to my wifi router and the setup was completed entirely on the Eufy smartphone app, which was simple to do. All in all it probably took me around 20 minutes to install and set up.One thing I quickly realised which I hadn't considered before is that my existing wireless bell had 2 chime units. This was to allow the doorbell to be heard from anywhere in the house. With these smart doorbells, the main base unit (which is connected to your wifi router) is the chime. Depending on where your router is in your house, this may leave parts of the house unable to hear the doorbell ringing. The doorbell does alert you on your phone so this may alleviate the issue if you (or your family members) always have a phone with them in an area where the base unit chime may not be heard. One feature that can be set up (but does require a bit more configuration) is to set up the bell so that is announced on any Alexa capable devices that you have in your home. We were fortunate that we have a number of echo devices throughout our home so whenever the doorbell rings it not only rings on the main base unit but it also alerts all of our phones and our Echo devices. So solution solved for us.To get the most out of your doorbell you may want to take advantage of the motion detection features. However to do this you will need to delve further into the configuration and make some adjustments otherwise you may find that you are getting a lot of false alerts, especially if your doorbell is positioned in a way that it will pick up people or vehicles that are moving past. You also need to understand that the more alerts you receive the more frequently you will need to remove the doorbell to charge the internal battery. However, once you have set up the bell just the way you want it, it works very well. I have set it up so that if someone approached my door but doesn't press the bell, it won't send me an alert but it will record a short 10 second video clip of whoever it was at my door. If someone presses my bell, it sends an alert to all of my devices and starts recording. At this point I can choose to open the alert on my phone, see who is at the door and if required, talk to them. This is obviously very useful if you are not at home and you want to instruct a delivery driver to leave a parcel etc. I installed my doorbell around 2.5 weeks ago and my doorbell battery is at 68%. To be fair I did spend the first 2-3 days playing around with it a lot more and honing the settings so in reality I would say it should be at around 75% for the way that I have it set up now.If you have an Echo Show device (or FireTV) you can configure this to automatically show on that device who is at the door when the bell rings. If you want to be really clever you can set it up to automatically show when it detects motion at your doorbell so you can actually see the person approaching before they've pressed the doorbell. There is 16GB of internal storage in the main base unit for video recording purposes. Once this is full up it will start overwriting the earliest video clips. Access to any video recorded is accessible on your phone through the Eufy app at any time. There are no additional cloud storage charges like some other systems. It's a shame that they didn't include an SD card slot on the device to allow you to add additional storage if you wanted to hold onto footage for longer. I will point out that any footage captured can be downloaded to your phone/tablet and saved off or sent elsewhere very easily from the app.The quality of the image and the captured video (2k) is very good and at night the night vision (Black & White image) works very well.I was that impressed with how the system worked that as soon as I showed it to my mother she wanted me to order her one. She's 67 and managed to install and set hers up with very little help from myself, however she has been used to installing other smart devices such as Echo's and smart bulbs herself over the last year or so.I have 2 slight negatives. The first is that there is nothing to stop someone walking up to my door, unclipping my doorbell and walking off with it since it is not secured in any way. To be honest, if it was secured, it would make removal for charging a bit of a pain. Secondly, there is a bit of a delay in capturing video from the moment either someone presses the bell of the motion detection kicks in. This is because the device has to detect and then send the instruction to record via wifi to the base unit. They are no real biggies that would stop me from recommending this device though and I suspect that all similar systems would suffer the same issues.I would highly recommend this item.

Impressed, high quality video, well integrated, great notifications, a bit slow with Alexa video

Overall, very pleased. Also please to have internal storage and a promise of future expansion capability via the USB slot on the home base.Upside - easy to install, and useful voice messages as WiFi etc connects. App is fairly intuitive, and picture quality is superb. Seen comments on slowness to notify either via sensing a person or pressing the door bell. I have not issues there and alerts come through to my ipad, iPhone and Apple Watch quite quickly. Ability to integrate with Alexa to notify by voice and chime is superb when you have a few Alexa devices floating aroundDownside -1. No option to get Alexa show type devices to automatically show the doorbell video when rung on alert triggered (you have to ask Alexa to show the video2. Time to show the video on Alexa Show type devices is very slow, and will miss a caller by the time it comes up3 App, whilst intuitive is has many channels to browse options and some times not an intuitive space. For example, device comes with a HomeBase hub, which is super in terms of security and keeping storage outside of the ringer...but,,,you have to configure how the HomeBase rings via the doorbells settings vs Homebase. Also if you are just a doorbell user, the Homebase is build for a lot more (which again is superb in terms of expansion to other cameras and sensor etc), but some features need more expanation, like the Alarms. I’ve seen a few chats from other confused by thisWould I recommend .... absolutely. I am sure Ring is great, but frankly, why pay a storage subscription every month when you can store locally inside your house and secure. So pay a bit more up front or pay later to get cloud storage with other devices .... your choiceUpdateHad it 3 weeks and sadly I am sending it back for replacementTWO days ago the system appeared to reset itself and when trying a restart told me it had been updated AND all devices needed to be removed and re-added......effectively a re-install. Whilst disappointing I did that, set up is fairly easy. ODD as the version numbers where recent but not in this week.TWO days later at 4am (today), I am woken up with an very pleasant Asian voice telling me ONCE again system is ready to install (that being from the Home Base).....Ground Hog day - repeated the same process. Noted this was more difficult and the speaker was making crackling noises. Got it installed and decided to contact supportPro's: I messaged support and did feedback and got both responses within 1 day. That beats other supplies of reputable brand (beginning with Y and 4 characters). However as and IT practitioner I had tried everything they suggested and have returned the device as it is faultyCon's: Phone support only available in the UK from 6am - 11am, I tried and gave up with the wait timeConclusion - A promising product with well through through functionality. HOWEVER given the home base is designed to be a jack of all trades (Cameras, Door Bell Sensors and looking like a home alarm system), this product needs to be more robust. The 16GB of onboard storage is good for one device, but put many on there ... well that's going to hurt. Promise of USB storage later in the year. And yes, I have ordered a new one as other brand systems are all mostly heading towards "pay as you go" cloud storage, which frankly should lower the price to make them more attractive. OK £3 / month, not the end of the world but Eufy has nailed that with a hub inside the house, well encrypted data and then 'who cares' if the devices gets nicked as you have the storage in the house.Message to Eufy ---- feel free to contact me, I'd be happy to customer test your products. Reference number is #29670178Update ..... a few weeks into the replacement product. Working very well and really delighted with the speed on notifications when the door rings. Works great with my Apple Watch and always nice to know when in the garden if the doorbell is being rung. Eufy have followed up directly with me on the post, as such very impressed with support and clarity of communication.
